Residence Hall Transition to Heating

fall on campus
Posted about 2 years ago in Parents & Families of Residential Students .

The following email was sent to all residential students:

As nights are becoming cooler and winter weather is soon approaching, the WKU Department of Facilities Management (DFM) is now preparing for the “heating season.”

Cooler outdoor temperatures are predicted overnight on Friday. In preparation, the residence halls may start to experience warmer temperatures by Thursday, November 10.

Students may experience fluctuating temperatures during this period as indoor and outdoor temperatures start to level out. However, if students suspect an issue with their air unit, please submit a maintenance request.

The Residence Hall heating systems will be first in line for the steam heat to arrive and then the Education and General buildings will quickly follow.

Several buildings are constructed in a way that once the cooling mode is turned off and transitioned to heat, we are unable to go back to the cooling mode until spring. In the event that outdoor temperatures begin to rise again, we will be unable to cool down those buildings (Douglas Keen, Gilbert, Hugh Poland, Minton, Pearce Ford Tower, and Rodes Harlin).

Please remember to follow the HVAC best practices:

  • Keep your system set to 70-73 degrees
  • Keep all system settings turned on and in "automatic"
  • Do not fluctuate between extreme temperatures
  • Wipe up moisture with a dry cloth and hang up damp clothing/shoes
  • Keep your windows closed to prevent excess humidity
  • Report maintenance issues immediately
  • Keep the area in front of your air unit clear
  • Clean and dust your room with disinfectant wipes frequently

Need a Big Red Repair?

Is there anything that needs our attention that you haven't already submitted to us? We likely won't know about it unless you tell us!

You can submit a maintenance request through the WKU Housing Portal via my.wku.edu.
