One of the first academic checkpoints at WKU is upon us – 5th Week Assessment!
On Tuesday, September 28, your student will receive an email informing them that their 5th week assessment is ready to view. In this assessment, grade and attendance information is provided by instructors teaching 100 and 200-level courses:
- Students will know if they are “passing” a course, or whether they have a “D/F”.
- Attendance will be reported if the student has excessive (more than 3) classes missed.
DO:
- ...Ask your student to show you their results (Reminder: WKU cannot provide results to anyone except the student).
- ...Celebrate their success if they have good marks and attendance.
- ...Refer to campus resources, available in the Parent & Family Portal.
- ...Continue to check-in with your student throughout the semester. Your encouragement and motivation is vital to their success!
DON’T:
- ...Get upset if your student has D/F marks or absences; instead, help them create a plan to seek help from campus resources, and set new expectations with them for studying, attending class, meeting with their faculty, using tutoring, etc.
- ...Let your student give up! There’s still 10 weeks go to in the semester, and with help, they can be successful!
- ...Forget to use the Parent & Family Portal to help guide your student to academic resources such as tutoring, study groups, etc.
Please encourage your student to reach out to their hall director, academic advisor, faculty or other trusted WKU staff person for guidance, if needed. We appreciate your partnership to help your Hilltopper be successful.
